# How to create Categories in WooCommerce

Before starting the product import process, we recommend creating your **product categories** in WooCommerce. This ensures that once you import products, they will be assigned to the correct categories in your store.

### **Step 1: Navigate to Categories**
From your WordPress Dashboard:
**Products → Categories**

### **Step 2: Create a Parent Category**
On the left-hand side, you will see the **Add New Category** section.
Fill in:
* **Name** (e.g., Bags)
* **Slug** (optional – will generate automatically if left empty)
* **Parent Category** → Leave as *None* (for parent categories)
Click **Add New Category**.
Repeat the same process for another parent category (e.g., Shoes).
In this example, we created two parent categories:
* **Bags**
* **Shoes**

### **Step 3: (Optional) Create Subcategories**
If needed, you can create subcategories such as:
* Bags → Men
* Bags → Women
* Shoes → Men
* Shoes → Women
To do this:
* Enter the category name
* Select the appropriate **Parent Category**
* Click **Add New Category**

Once your categories are created, you can proceed to:
**BrandsGateway → Settings → Category Mapping**

There, you will connect our Retailer Categories to your newly created WooCommerce categories.
